I GIVE UP! I THINK I NEED SOME HELP!

It is very strange how I find that a lot (if not all) Gen-Xers have a tendency to be hyper-independent.

Myself included.

We grew up on late summer nights roaming the streets with our mates, fizzy pop on a Friday, no internet to occupy us and the belief that we could do ANYTHING constantly being fed to us with our Weetabix.

Of course, we were going to by hyper independent. We were the first generation to think that travelling abroad was an everyday thing. We were the first generation of kids that grew up in houses with just our parents.  - because our parents could afford to move our of grannie’s house. Convenience was king and we hacked our way through everything our predecessors found time consuming and effortful.

When you spend over 40 years of your life setting yourself high standards and then striving to meet them on your own, then when you find yourself on the verge of burnout, it can be extremely difficult to ask for help.

It isn’t just a pride thing. It is also a control thing. It is also a trust thing.

Well, I finally admitted defeat

I realised that if I was going to do what I wanted to do in my lifetime, that I was going to have to reach out to people I know and ask them to bring their skills to my table. I would have to trust them, I would have to relinquish the firm grip on the control and I would have to start focusing on what I am good at.

Honestly, this is most probably the hardest thing I have had to do in my business. But the way we build our businesses successfully, now very heavily relies on collaboration, outsourcing and developing relationships.

So here are a few ideas that may help you if you want to begin taking your hands off the wheel a little bit and allowing your business to become everything it can be.

Find great people to work with and make friends with them.

One of my favourite things to do is expand my circle of mates in business so that when I can’t do something myself, I know the exact right person to step in for me and shoulder some of the load.

Outsource - start with the stuff you enjoy the least

Just take a look at the things you take an AGE to get around to doing, the thing you MUST or SHOULD do but feel like you are forcing yourself to do. That is the first thing that you outsource, delegate or get help with. Make business easier for yourself and work more on the stuff you are good at or have an interest in already. Learn the basics and then trust your new biz bestie to do the crappy stuff for you. They are the expert in it after all!

Celebrate your wins together

If you outsource, build a team or get some help, recognise that you are a partnership and that you can celebrate success together. There is nothing better than eating cake through the smiles and chatting in detail about what has gone right and be amazed by how quickly it all happened!

Let yourself be human

Yes of course, you are superhuman. But sometimes it is OK to be human. It is OK to feel tired and afraid and nervous. Your superpowers don’t go away. They just sit there waiting for you ready to rock and roll as soon as you have your energy back. In the meantime, those besties… they got you.
